It’s your worst nightmare you never knew you had: getting sick on your much-anticipated vacation.
And that nightmare came true for as many as 1,000 passengers on the Royal Caribbean cruise that docked in New Jersey days early due to what could’ve been a norovirus, the highest number of sick passengers reported on any cruise ship in two decades.
So how do you keep yourself healthy when you’re more susceptible to germs and viruses that essentially transcend continents?
Follow these tips featured in Conde Nast Traveler:
Get enough sleep
As simple as it sounds, it’ll keep your immune system strong. Invest in a sleep mask, ear plugs and oil of oregano, which is like nature’s antibiotic. Anti-microbial and anti-fungal, it works wonder when you feel an upset stomach or cold coming on. Tumeric pills will also keep your immune system in tip-top shape.
Don’t underestimate the power of sanitizer
We’re not saying you need to be a germaphobe. After all, it’s good to build up antibodies to certain bacteria. But, whether it be anti-bacterial wipes, hand sanitizer or the simple act of washing your hands before you eat, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Bring along what works for you
There’s nothing more taxing that getting sick in a foreign country and trying to explain your symptoms to a pharmacist in a different language. Do yourself a favor and take along whatever works for you: Tylenol, Aleve, Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil are always winners. Also, consider a broad-spectrum antibiotic like ciprofloxacin for intestinal issues. Just remember to try and keep these items in their original packaging to avoid suspicious agents in customs. Don’t want to carry your entire medicine cabinet around? Luckily, many over-the-counter medications are sold in travel size as well.
It may be a little unconventional, but…
If you’re the unlucky passenger sitting in the vicinity of a coughing, wheezing, walking virus, you’ll want to dab some of Lucas’ Papaw papaya ointment around your nostrils as soon as you board the plane/train/bus ect. Not only is it moisturizing, but it’ll protect you from catching whatever the person next to you has. Also, organic oat-based Superfood instant cereal – all you have to do is add milk or water—because when you eat healthy, you’re more likely to stay healthy.
